Today we are going to start a series on Winter driving that includes “what to do if you get stuck in the ditch” in a Metropolitan area like the Twin Cities followed with what to do if you are traveling “in the sticks” and you get stuck.   This will include Winter driving preparedness tips including some survival know how!

So you are thinking about driving in the Twin Cities Metro during a stormy winter morning.  The weather guys on the TV said stay home.  That’s the first thing to consider.  Planning ahead, if you can wait to drive then by all means do so!  You can also check 511mn.org and see what road conditions are currently.  But for today’s purposes, you decide you have to get to work.  You are confident your car, truck or SUV is in “tip top” shape because you service your vehicle at AutoPro auto service serving Brooklyn Park, Champlin and Fridley!  So you are going to brave the weather!  On your way, you should fill up with gas.  This way, if you do get stuck into a ditch you know you will have enough gas to keep warm.  You begin your journey!  The roads are icy and you're doing your best to concentrate! And then it happens.  You slide into the ditch.  Now what do you do (besides eliciting a few choice expletives)?

Well, here's what you're supposed to do!  First off stay in the car! And KEEP your seatbelts buckled!  If the road is slippery where you went into the ditch it's still slippery and other drivers may slide where you just slid (this has happened to me) and being in the car will protect you better than being outside of the car and taking a chance on getting hit!

Next, make sure to turn your flashers on to maximize your visibility.  Then call 911 before calling your other towing sources such as AAA or other sources you maintain.  If you have to get out and clear your tail pipe, do it quickly and get back into the car and buckle up!

We will cover winter survival kits more thoroughly in another blog but sure that you have ALREADY packed boots, a warm coat, hat, gloves, blanket, jumper cables, shovel, ice scraper and a flashlight with extra batteries!  You should also have some water and foods that last such as granola bars.

For out next blog, we will talk about how to prepare if you are traveling “off the beaten path” and how to be safe if you get stuck in the middle of nowhere!
